To Print or not to Print: Making Smart Decisions in Additive Manufacturing

3D printing offers incredible possibilities, but knowing when and how to use it effectively is critical for successful product development. In some cases, 3D printing is not the solution, even though it is tempting to use it for everything. This session guides participants through the decision-making process for additive manufacturing, exploring which parts are best suited for 3D printing, which technologies to choose, and how material selection impacts performance and cost. Using real-world examples, attendees will learn how to evaluate functional requirements, production volume, tolerances, and post-processing needs to determine the most effective approach. The session also highlights strategies for integrating 3D printing into existing workflows and design processes, helping participants make informed choices that balance innovation, efficiency, and practicality. Attendees should leave with the practical knowledge to answer the question “to print or not to print” with confidence.

Matthew Guy is the founder of Niche3D LLC, where he partners with startups, businesses, and individuals to turn ideas into reality through 3D printing, CAD design, and product development. With a background in mechanical engineering and experience at additive manufacturing startups in both industrial and consumer 3D printing, he specializes in bridging the gap between concept and production—delivering everything from prototypes to end-use parts. Matthew also co-hosts Layered Insights, a podcast that explores the world of 3D printing with technical expertise and engaging discussion. His mission is to expand the use of 3D printing technologies and their applications.
