Oct 14, 4:00 – 5:00 PM (UTC)
SOLIDWORKS User Group of New York City
Bring real-world spaces into your digital workflow. In this practical session, we’ll show how modern 3D scanning—paired with SOLIDWORKS and the QUICKSURFACE plug-in—helps architects, engineers, and manufacturers capture existing conditions, validate layouts, and accelerate space planning for buildings and factories. You’ll see a field-to-CAD workflow and a live look at how QUICKSURFACE turns scan data into editable geometry inside SOLIDWORKS.
Featured Guest
Arthur Young-Spivey, Creative Director of Business Development at Direct Dimensions and adjunct professor at Parsons The New School (20 years). A Pratt Institute Industrial Design graduate, Arthur has brought products to market across tabletop, furniture, and lighting. For 25+ years he’s focused on digital fabrication—how 3D Printing, 3D Scanning, and 3D Software transform design and engineering across industries.
What Attendees Can Expect
• How LiDAR systems work — field best practices for capturing, aligning, and validating accurate point clouds.
• Getting data into SOLIDWORKS — common methods and file types for smooth import (point clouds, meshes, etc.).
• Reverse engineering with the QUICKSURFACE plug-in — fit surfaces/solids to scans and create editable, parametric features directly in SOLIDWORKS.
• From scans to deliverables — extract measurements and produce reliable 2D drawings/3D models for building, factory, and space-planning decisions.
Who should attend
Engineers, designers, facility planners, BIM/VDC specialists, and anyone documenting existing spaces or planning reconfigurations.
