North East England SOLIDWORKS User Group

imported ASSY data from Unigraphics

Summary: BILL Hogg has recently joined the group and is seeking help with SolidWorks, particularly struggling with moving sub-assemblies or parts within a main assembly. The issue seems to be that the parts are fixed, without visible mates in the tree. Felix Stoll responded with a solution, suggesting checking for an (f) in front of the parts in the tree and using the 'Float' option to remove the constraint. Felix Stoll also inquired about previous 3D CAD systems BILL Hogg has used.
AI Summary

Hi All,

New to the group thank you for having me onboard

I am new to Solid works but have experience in other 3D cad systems

Having trouble in trying to move sub Assy / parts within main ASSY

issue seems to be the y are fixed but there are no mates visible in the tree?

so when you try to reposition an item you get the message the part is fixed and cannot be moved

I anyone has come across this situation and has a fix or work around I would love to hear from you

Kind regards

Bill Hogg

In the assembly tree on the left, is there a little (f) in front of the subassy/part that you are trying to move?
If so that means the part/subassembly is constraint in absolute terms to your coordinate system. If you right click onto the part/subassembly name in the tree you should see the option 'Float' in the pop-up menu. Click that and the (f) should change to an (-), which means your part/subassembly is not constraint.
If there is no (-) or (f) than the part is fully constrained using mates.

Appreciate that I am a bit late to the party, so I hope you've already found a solution to your problem!

What systems have you worked on before SolidWorks?
