iPhone 3D scan to solid model help needed!

Summary: mzc7vb is a self-taught SolidWorks user needing assistance to convert a 3D scan into a solid model. They have a lapsed software license and are designing an adaptive seat for a para-athlete. They successfully scanned the seat using Polycam and saved it as an .stl file, but are struggling with converting it into a solid model. They experience issues with importing, grayed-out options, and failed attempts to thicken the surface in SolidWorks. They seek help to smooth features and add mounting points to the model.

Hey all. I’ve been a self-taught SW user since 2003, and have had active licenses off and on since then. Mine is currently lapsed and I’m running 2021 on my system. I design products for my own company, a military design and development firm here in San Diego.

I am an active surfski kayak paddler and racer, and have been helping the para-athletes prepare for the World Cup events coming up. There are little to no resources available to these athletes who are missing limbs, have deformities or other geometric and symmetry issues, but they are working harder than anyone on the courses. I was able to design and build a great solution for one of our paddlers who is missing his legs from the knee down, and it helped immensely. Since then, the others have lined up looking for engineering solutions, as they have been completely on their own sourcing from Home Depot or O’Reileys for parts and solutions.

I am trying to make an adaptive seat for one of our strongest athletes who is missing her left femur. Using 2 part foam I was able to build a mold essentially of what I need to replicate in 3D printing. That is where I am running out of talent.

I have zero experience in surfacing. I was able to use Polycam to scan the seat successfully, and I have it saved as an .stl, and it opens in SW, but that is the limit of what I can do with it In a perfect world, I would be able to import it, turn it into a solid and star using some Instant 3D tools to smooth out the features, add some extrusion for mounting points and convert it into an actual seat. Even if I could slice it up and make templates to use as lofted extrusions or something it would be helpful. Most of my options upon import are grayed out and unavailable, and I haven’t been able to use the 3D import tools at all. Once in SW I try to thicken the surface but it fails, and I don’t know how to fix the failures
